Toilet Training

Children like Mikey are odd little creatures... i suppose any child can have their quirks though too. Mikey has decided that he loves baths! go figure! when just a few months ago, heck actually a few weeks ago, he would scream and carry on at the prospect of getting undressed and having a bath... but now it seems he's LOVING it! he had THREE baths today!!! lol. This coincides with Mikeys brilliance in relation to Toiletting. Of course you would assume that a nearly 5yo child would be ready for toiletting, yes of course you would, and this is brilliant that he is finally losing his sensory processing obstacles when it comes to his nappy and the security it provided. Mikey is doing wonderfully and has taken great delight in using the toilet including interupting normally quite distracting activities to run to the toilet. Sleeping, Playdoh, Playground, Bathtime. i know so many kids who peed in the bath... including my own obviously... i'm thrilled that Mikey takes off out of the bath to use the toilet. what an awesome kid. Mikeys teachers are watching him closely and If mikey continues to progress with the speed in which he has been, he may be ready to enter a Satelite class next year. A Satelite class is a branch off the ASPECT base school and is located at mainstream schools around the central coast (or whereever else they need to be). This provides the children with Autism the chance to attend school closer to home and also enable them to access more mainstream levels of education with the respect and attention to their sensory processing problems which would not be able to be addressed in mainstream classes due to too many students or not enough special needs trained teachers. Adam and I aren't 100% sure but will definetely trust the teachers come time to make a decision. We want mikey to be in a location where he will thrive and keep on going stronger. If a mainstream school is where this is then it's where he'll be. We worry about bullying though... Mikey is such a sensitive boy but also very unaware and we dont want him being beaten up or taken advantage of... it's so scary for a child who is not able to understand or defend themselves... most neurologically typical children struggle with understanding why the other kids dont like them or why they hurt them... i can't imagine the fear and pain that would go through his pure little mind if people continually attacked him. ahhh but if we focussed on all the what ifs, then we'd send ourselves insane. Another new point is that Mikey has been copying Annabelle like CRAZY! one of the newest additions to his vocabulary is "Annabelle stop copying me!"... wanna guess where it came from? "Mikey stop copying me!" LMAO. i think it's awesome that he personalises it though instead of just echoing her complaint. ahh gosh it's funny having kids so close in age. LOL. poor annabelle... the other new phrase is "stop it i dont like it!" i can thank Bellies preschool for that one. it's wonderful and we use it daily and i love the self expression and communication. Next step - teaching them to LISTEN! ;) hmmm nothing much else new to report i dont think... Mikey is finishing all his school work and doing well at home being a good kid. occaisional tantrums but overall good. Zoe and Belle are both brilliant too. gosh i'm lucky to have such fantastic children. Till next time :)
