Every child goes through stages where they will assert their independance and attempt to assert authority over parents, siblings, animals, etc.
They seemingly learn these methods from the people who are around them, more likely than not, their parents.
With your NT kids - neuroligically typical - it's somewhat easy to explain to them that this is not acceptable behaviour, that they're not the ones in charge and it's not their role to tell people what to do. Placing an older child in a position of disciplinary over a younger sibling is going to be asking for trouble.
So what do we do when we are in need of disciplining our children for every day situations, but one of the children is developmentally disabled and doesn't have the comprehension to know that they're not permitted to mimic this disipline behaviour?
Mikey has been showing increased anger and frustration as he gets older - i feel horrible in some ways because he's mimicking my own behaviour.
Talking to Adam on the phone about Mikey's outbursts toward his sisters and us and i find myself in the biggest predicament so far...
How do i possible discipline my children and keep them in line in a way which i believe is successful if i need to be mindful of mikey and keep him from doing it too.
Simply telling him that it's not acceptable for him to copy this doesnt work...
Annabelle gets smacked on the hand and bottom if Mikey feels she's intruding on his space. She gets told to get back to bed when she's just gotten up from her nap or if she's getting out of bed when she should be asleep Mikey takes it upon himself to tell her off and demand she goes back to bed.
While on a side note im thrilled that he has picked up these extra words and speech patterns, it bothers me that he does this and poor Annabelle is being smacked and hit innapropriately.
I want to point out that yes i do smack, but i dont smack for everything. it's a last resort after a few verbal reminders of what i require of them, and even then i dont always smack i will take them and help them gently if i feel a smack is more detrimental than helpful in that situation.
So.... i guess it's just one of those things - a normal development milestone for a kid somewhere between the ages of 18 months and 4 years old...
Mikey's new sentence is "Back to bed now!"
